The Cambridge Building Society wins Employer of the Year at the Cambridge Independent Business Awards

Cambridge Independent Business Awards - Employer of the yearWe’re pleased to announce that The Cambridge Building Society has been named Employer of the Year at the inaugural Cambridge Independent Business Awards. We sponsored this prestigious award because it recognises companies who are going the extra mile for their employees and creating great workplaces.

Alongside The Cambridge Building Society, the other finalists were:

  • Conscious Communications
  • Domino Printing
  • G’s Fresh
  • Redgate Software

What made The Cambridge Building Society stand out?

The judges chose The Cambridge Building Society from this strong group of contenders thanks to the ways they support their people. These include having clear and well-articulated values, and investing in flexible working. In fact, they’ve completely refurbished their head office to include collaboration zones, a quiet space and hybrid meeting rooms. Their commitment to staff training and development also stood out, as did their consistently high scores on employee engagement surveys.

Other things that set The Cambridge Building Society apart were their commitments to diversity, the environment and to the local community. For example:

  • their board is 50% female
  • they’ve created an internal awareness-raising initiative covering topics like neurodiversity, menopause, gender identity, religion and mental health. They also encourage employees to share their stories
  • they’ve added solar panels to their HQ building and introduced an electric car scheme
  • they’ve raised £40,000 this year for four local charities.

Victoria Filler, Head of People at The Cambridge Building Society CBS: shared her excitement about the award. ‘We are immensely proud to receive the Employer of the Year award. This award recognises the strong workplace culture we have at The Cambridge. Our team members create that culture through their support for each other, their commitment to our customers and the hard work they put into making the Society a success.'

David Culley, Managing Director at Pure and one of the judges, said this about the winner:

‘The Cambridge Building Society stood out among an exceptionally strong field of finalists. They’re showing what’s possible when a company trusts its people to define and drive its culture. This has created a positive environment where everyone feels a sense of ownership.’
